The cultural immersion is the practice of engaging and becoming integrated in another culture. Whether studying abroad or traveling on spring break, cultural immersion can help maximize your trip and help you discover something new about other societies.

Studies have demonstrated the beneficial results of global service learning (GSL), study abroad programs, and international internships on cultural tolerance, global awareness, self-development, listening skills development, intercultural communication and critical thinking.

    Language

Cultural immersion is the process of immersing students into cultures different than their own and can result in various benefits for both parties involved, such as perspective transformation which enables students to change their perceptions on various issues and change perspectives on various subjects and problems.

Language immersion experiences are an integral component of cultural immersion experiences. Speaking with native speakers of your desired target language can be extremely enriching and give you greater insight into its culture.

Language immersion programs have been shown to offer numerous advantages for both affluent and lower-income students alike, from increasing academic performance in subjects to learning a new language or intercultural communication. Unfortunately, however, these benefits can quickly disappear if language immersion does not coincide with cultural experiences, and is disconnected from its cultural context in which learning occurs. That’s why many schools now incorporate cultural activities such as attending traditional celebrations of target languages or performing dances and songs from the target country into their programs as part of language immersion learning programs.

    Food

Food can be an incredible tool to experience culture. Each food represents traditions, beliefs, and practices associated with its origin country – or can even serve as a bridge between different communities across borders.

In order to truly comprehend a place’s culture, it’s necessary to learn how to cook its cuisine, study its history and art forms, or observe how locals use its ingredients in everyday life – experiences like these will give an authentic glimpse of its heart rather than simply its superficial facade.

Resonating with culture while respecting someone else’s beliefs can be tricky; but one important thing to keep in mind is that you should appreciate and not exploit or appropriate any culture you immerse yourself in.

    Art

Art is an expressive medium with many facets, from paintings and sculptures to drawings, music composition, architecture design, writing and more.

As part of your travel experience in a new country, it’s essential that you become knowledgeable of its art culture. This can be achieved by visiting museums and art galleries as well as listening to their music and attending cultural events.

Art is not only an effective way of understanding different cultures, but can also serve to bridge divisions among people. Studies have indicated that exposing children to various cultures through art helps develop confidence and fosters self-respect in them.

Art is defined differently by different people at various times throughout history; one thing remains consistent – art serves to express emotions.

    Community

Engaging with people, learning about their culture and understanding their beliefs and traditions are all hallmarks of an enjoyable cultural immersion experience. You’ll also have ample opportunity to make lasting friendships that last a lifetime.

Your skills can also be shared with those in the community where you reside and work, providing much-needed economic benefits that could otherwise go unrealized in places with few alternative employment options.

An enriching cultural immersion experience can transform lives. It can push you out of your comfort zone and introduce new ways of viewing the world, leading to new self-knowledge, powerful experiences, strength and motivation.
