Most place you go to will have unwritten rules and visitors will be expected to have a general understanding of the etiquette. Casinos are no different – in fact, in some ways, casino etiquette is even more intense than most places – some establishments can be quite strict. So, it’s important that you brush up on the dos and don’ts of casinos and general gambling.
Now, some of them are obvious, but still need to be spoken about – things like cheating and underage gambling. Other things, however, are a little less obvious – things like dress code and behaviour.
Luckily for you, we know all the ins and outs of casino etiquette, so we’re going to give you the low down on things you should never do at a casino.
Underage Gambling
Underage gambling isn’t something that’s frowned upon, it’s illegal. Having laws against children gambling isn’t just to stop people from having fun, these laws exist and are enforced to protect children. Gambling is a strictly adult activity, and for good reason.
Indeed, underage gambling isa very serious offense. It’s not just about breaking the rules at a casino – you’ll be breaking the law. That means that if you’re reported to the authorities for underage gambling, you can be arrested as the guardian of the child, and you’ll be in serious trouble. It simply isn’t worth it.
The other thing to take note of is that rules and laws regarding ages for gambling differ slightly in different states, so make sure you’re aware of this before you travel across the country.
Break the Casino’s General Rules
If you’ve ever watched a gambling movie, you’ll know that casinos are serious places – not a good place to mess around and break the rules! There’s big money at stake, and so the ules and regulations are designed to be able to not only keep things fair, but also to keep everybody safe and everything secure. As soon as you start messing with the rules, you put yourself and other people in jeopardy, and that’s not something that the casino security will take lightly.
This is also true when it comes to playing specific games. So, before you start playing a new game, make sure that you’re familiar with the rules – including how to play, proper conduct and betting limits – so that you don’t ruin it for everyone else.
Create a Disturbance
One thing that won’t be tolerated at a casino is if you create a disturbance. Casinos are supposed to places of fun and entertainment! It’s meant to be a place for people to relax and feel secure. So, if you do anything to jeopardise that – if you’re too loud, aggressive or generally disruptive – you’re likely to be removed from the casino. So, just have fun, and everything should be okay!
Lose Control of Your Ability to Gamble Responsibly
Just like anything you do in life, it’s your responsibility to make sure that you’re behaving in a responsible manner. Set yourself limits and rules beforehand, and don’t cross those boundaries!
Abuse Alcohol or Drugs
There’s nothing wrong having a few drinks at the casino – in fact, most people to do! It’s a great way to help you relax, loosen up and have some fun!
However, as always, there’s a line, and if you cross that line and go too far – getting drunk, obnoxious, irresponsible, and disturbing other guests – you’re not going to be allowed to stick around.
So have a few drinks, but make sure you know when to stop.
When it comes to drugs, illegal substances are strictly prohibited from entering casinos. If you get caught with anything, you’re going to be in big trouble, so don’t even risk it!
Violate the Dress Code
It may sound like a small thing, but casinos take dress code very seriously, and if you aren’t dressed properly, it’s likely that you won’t be able to enter. Or, if you’re already inside, you may even be asked to leave or change your clothes.
It all depends on the casino in question though, as different establishments have different dress codes. Some are fairly casual while others are super formal.
So, before you head to a casino – before you even pack your bag and book your trip – make sure you check out what the dress code is so you can make sure it suits the vibe you’re going for!
If you’re just wanting to gamble and have fun, you may not be into a formal place. You may find that playing at Black Lotus in your PJs in your room is a better option. But if glitz and glam is your thing, you’ll absolutely love the formal casinos where you need to dress up – it’ll make you feel like you’re in a “James Bond” movie!
Touch Other People’s Chips or Belongings
Touching other people’s belongings is pretty inappropriate at the best of times, but even more so when you’re at a casino. Whether it’s somebody’s bag, jacket or whatever, you simply shouldn’t go near other people’s stuff.
Now, if it’s their chips – their gambling chips, that is – it’s even more important that you don’t touch their stuff! In casinos, chips equal money, so if you’re caught fiddling with somebody else’s chips, it’s going to look like you’re doing something dodgy and trying to steal their chips!
This is even more important if you’re busy playing a game. Even if you mean well and are even trying to be helpful, you never touch someone else’s chips. Even if it’s to help them move their chips across the table. Unless somebody specific asks you to move them, keep your hands to yourself.
Use Electronic Devices at Inappropriate Times
Sitting on your phone or using your tablet while you’re in company is pretty rude at the best of times, but even more so when you’re at a casino and you’re busy gambling with other people. In fact, not only is it rude, but some people may even accuse you of cheating! So, the golden rule of gambling is that you should never look at your phone during a game!
