Getting hit by the flu virus sucks. The flu comes on quickly, unlike a cold. Classic symptoms of the flu include fever, muscle aches, chest congestion, dry cough and headache. While you can get antivirals from the doctor, most people just let the flu virus run its course at home. If the symptoms get worse, you can always contact your healthcare provider. Here’s what to do when you have the flu. Find an OTC flu medicine that minimizes certain symptoms so you don’t feel completely miserable. S

    Stay Home

If you have a fever, you should stay home from work or school until the fever is gone for 24 hours without fever reducers. You are the most contagious when you have a fever. Don’t spread your flu germs around town and make more people sick. Pushing through the symptoms and trying to keep going will only make you more tired.

    Get Plenty Of Rest

When you first notice symptoms, you are going to need plenty of rest. The flu virus saps your energy. You are going to want to go to bed early. Take a nap if possible to get on the road to recovery quicker. If you’re coughing, try a homeopathic remedy for chest congestion to help you rest better.

    Drink Plenty Of Fluids

You may not feel like eating or drinking, but you’re going to need to stay hydrated. Water is best, but if you can tolerate hot tea or chicken soup, those drinks can help alleviate congestion and soothe your throat. Apple juice can be easy on your stomach if you’re nauseated. Jell-O can also be a different treat when you’re not feeling well. Don’t eat junk food. Try to stick with healthier options that provide nutrients and vitamins to help your body heal.

    Saline Spray

If your nasal passages are blocked due to the flu, saline spray can help open those passages so you can breathe easier. If you have a dry vs wet cough, use a humidifier to help keep your membranes moistened during the cooler months. When your nose starts running, use lotion tissues and put the tissues in the trash right away to reduce the spread of germs.

    Warm Showers or Steam Baths

To ease the sore muscles and achiness associated with the flu, try a warm shower or bath. The steam will help ease a cough and stuffy nose. The warm water will soothe your body. You should sleep better after a warm shower, so just plan on getting back into bed and trying to rest.

Should You See a Healthcare Provider?

There are antivirals you can take to reduce the flu symptoms, but those medications are only available by a prescription and must be taken within a certain time frame to be effective. You may still experience minimal symptoms and need to rest to get back to your normal routine. Know when you should see your doctor about your flu symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or an extremely high fever. You’ll get through another flu season when you’re prepared for it.
