What’s the Best Acne Treatment For Dealing With Cystic Acne?

While acne is a generic term that covers persistent breakouts, the condition is a multi-layered one that involves many different levels of severity. At the mild end of the spectrum, we have whiteheads and blackheads, whereas cystic acne, pustules and nodules. The difference between the severities means that the best acne treatment for one might not be effective for another.

So, if you do happen to be suffering from one of the more acute forms of acne, what’s the best type of product for your needs? Keep reading to find out.

The Best Acne Treatment for Cystic Acne Is a Higher Concentration

When dealing with cystic acne, dermatologists normally steer you towards a higher-concentration benzoyl peroxide product. As such, the best acne treatment will be a 10% foaming wash, as it will have the necessary power to penetrate deep within the pores.

Sure, 2.5% and 4% varieties will also have this effect, but the raised concentration of a 10% product will penetrate more deeply and kill more of the bacteria that cause acne.

Another reason for opting for a 10% acne wash is that it will be better at bringing down the swelling and inflammation that typically accompany cystic acne. That means when using it, you can reduce the size, frequency and pain of the breakouts you get.

    Promoting the Keratolytic Effect

As well as helping to clear out the impurities from your pores, a 10% foaming wash containing benzoyl peroxide also promotes the keratolytic effect. What is that we hear you say? Well, it’s the process of shedding dead cells from the surface of your skin, and it’s crucial in preventing said dead skin cells from finding their way into your hair follicles.

So, how often does a product like this have to be used in order to see results? For a 10% product, it’s best to start slow and work your way up, as you have to be sure that you’re not going to get a reaction. Start using the product once per day after carrying out a patch test to ensure that your skin doesn’t have a particular problem. You’ll soon see how your skin copes with benzoyl peroxide, and you can continue as you are or increase frequency as needed.

It’s also a really good idea to use a moisturizer to deal with any dryness or peeling that you get in those first few weeks. Choose a non-comedogenic product to ensure that you don’t end up re-blocking those pores for the sake of hydration

Consistency is Key – Even With the Best Acne Treatment

No matter which type or concentration of benzoyl peroxide you end up using, consistency is needed. You have to keep the faith, even during those early days when it might feel like things aren’t getting better that quickly. Listen to what your skin is telling you and ensure that you stick to your routine day in and day out.

Whether your routine involves an application once or twice per day, make sure that you maintain it. Back it up with a good non-comedogenic moisturizer, and you’ll be well on the way to acne-free skin.
